Headshot Pic_edited_edited.jpg

Tim Butler is the Assistant Director of the KU Marching Unit, and an Assistant Professor of Music. He recently earned his Ph.D. in Music Education from the Pennsylvania State University, where he worked primarily with the Penn State Blue Band and Pride of the Lions Pep Band. His dissertation and ongoing research examines how students develop lifelong leadership skills through participation in marching band.

As an assistant at Penn State, Dr. Butler regularly facilitated student leader training and led pep bands to high-visibility performances throughout the country. While studying for his Master’s in Music Education at Bowling Green State University, he volunteered with the Falcon Marching Band. Before starting his graduate studies, Dr. Butler directed the grade 5-12 band program at Holgate Local Schools and wrote all the musical arrangements and drill formations for the Pride of Holgate marching band.

Tim began his marching career as a baritone player in Baltimore’s Marching Ravens, and ended as a fourth-year section leader in The Ohio State University Marching Band. His expertise in Division I marching bands and styles complements the vast corps-style background of the KUMU instructional staff.
